Becoming a parent and starting a family can be such a life-changing experience, something couples aspire to. For many couples who have difficulty or problems conceiving naturally due to fertility issues, consider going for IVF.

It is one of the most advanced and highly effective options for having kids. IVF for beginners, it literally means “fertilisation in glass” as it is a sophisticated assisted reproductive technology (ART) where women’s eggs are fertilised with sperm outside of the human body in a controlled laboratory setting.

In this IVF guide for couples, we simplify IVF for you, explain why you should consider it, the process, preparation, challenges, and everything to make this decision simple and clear.

What is IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)?

So here’s how IVF treatment basics go! IVF is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) where sperm and eggs are fertilised outside the human body.

It is indeed a complex process involving retrieving eggs from ovaries and then manually fusing them with sperm in a lab to initiate fertilisation. After a few days, the fertilised egg, now called an embryo, is well-placed inside the uterus.

For understanding infertility treatments like IVF, you need to know the difference between IVF and other fertilisation treatments which is, where the fertilisation process happens and the medical intervention required.

For example, in IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), fertilisation happens inside the woman’s body as concentrated sperm are well-placed directly into the uterus using a catheter during ovulation.

Why Couples Consider IVF?

The IVF guide for couples helps you understand why most couples consider IVF in the first place. They turn to IVF when they have difficulty becoming parents through natural conception due to some biological problem or complex medical issues.

●      Common reasons to opt for IVF

  • Infertility: IVF is considered to be the primary treatment in the case of blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, preventing natural fertilisation. It also works in case of endometriosis, uterine fibroids and ovulation disorders such as PCOS.
  • Low sperm count: Apart from infertility challenges in females, another common reason to go for IVF is low sperm count in males or other sperm-related problems, such as poor motility or abnormally shaped sperm.
  • Age problem: Advanced maternal age, usually over 35, is another reason for considering IVF because egg quality and quantity naturally decline by that time, making conception challenging.

●      Emotional and practical motivations

Apart from common reasons, this beginner’s guide to IVF also highlights the emotional and practical motivations for pursuing IVF.

Many couples choose IVF once they have already gone through some failed attempts through other methods, such as IUI. Then, there are some couples who do not want to risk passing their genetic disorders, which IVF allows them to do through embryo testing (PGT) to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

In the case of same-sex couples or single individuals, it is a practical method to extend their family without going for donor eggs, sperm or surrogacy. Oftentimes, after repeated negative pregnancy tests, couples just prefer to go this route to avoid the emotional toll.

IVF Process Explained Step by Step

Through the IVF journey, you have to go through multiple stages of medical procedures of assisted conceiving by fertilising eggs outside of the woman’s body with sperm in a lab. The process can take somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks.

●      Ovarian stimulation

During this initial phase, patients self-administer injectable hormone medications for 8 to 14 days. IVF aims to retrieve multiple eggs to improve the chances of successful fertilisation.  You can expect regular monitoring through blood tests and ultrasounds during this time.

●      Egg retrieval

Once the eggs are well-matured, they are gathered through a minor surgical procedure. This minimally invasive step is pivotal in collecting viable eggs and lasts from 15 to 30 minutes. You will be here under mild sedation, so while there may be some cramping afterwards, the procedure itself is not painful.

●      Fertilisation in the lab

The eggs are combined with the sperm in the IVF lab for 2 to 4 hours. There are two methods. First is conventional insemination, where thousands of sperm are placed near each egg. The second method is ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), where only a single healthy sperm is injected directly into the egg.

●      Embryo transfer

Once fertilisation is done, the embryos are kept under monitoring in the lab for a week as the development can take this long to reach the blastocyst stage. After that stage, one or more embryos are transferred into the women’s uterus through a thin catheter. This one is a fast procedure where you don’t even need sedation.

●      Pregnancy testing

After two weeks of the embryo transfer, a blood test is conducted to cross-check for pregnancy. This two-week wait for couples is often the most emotional part of the process, where you will go through a lot.

How to Prepare for IVF?

Preparing for IVF requires both partners to optimise their physical and emotional health in advance before the treatment cycle begins. Here are some IVF success tips for couples:

●      Lifestyle related changes

  • Diet changes: Couples should adapt to a healthy, balanced diet rich in alkaline foods like fresh vegetables. They should reduce inflammatory foods such as Omega-6 fatty acids, grains, refined sugar, etc. Both partners should supplement their diet with multivitamins, Omega-3 and CoQ10 to improve the quality of eggs and sperm.
  • Stress management: Managing stress is essential, as high stress can negatively impact the success rates of pregnancy. You must practise relaxation techniques such as yoga, acupuncture and meditation.
  • Regular medical checkups: Before IVF, you must go through all the required medical checkups, tests and screenings, including initial consultations, semen analysis, uterine exam, screening for any STIs and more.

●      Emotional resilience and partner support

Having support from the partner, not only emotional but also physical and practical, will help you both go through this process better. For that, it is important to have open communication and empathy towards each other.

Partners must share household responsibilities and attend the doctor’s appointment together, making a safe space for each other.

For better emotional resilience, do not hesitate to get help from infertility counselors, therapists or support groups. Parents, friends and extended families can help in this journey too.

What are the Challenges and Things To Consider?

Understanding infertility treatments like IVF comes with physical, emotional, and financial challenges. There will be physical side effects such as bloating, nausea, headaches, and cramping due to the medication.

Then, there is this emotional rollercoaster where you sometimes feel hope and sometimes anxiety, especially during those two-week wait time following embryo transfer.

Also, it will be financially taxing as well since such treatments are expensive, costing lakhs. Not to forget, the time and mental space it will take through the process.

So you should be ready for such a financial investment before you enter the treatment cycle. It is essential you recognise these challenges and manage them proactively.

For that, you and your partner must be at best on a communication level. You must be well prepared, not just physically but also mentally and financially.

What are the Pro Tips for IVF Success?

Even though there is no guarantee for a specific outcome, there are things you can do to improve your odds. Here are IVF success tips for couples:

●      Choosing the right clinic

You should look for clinics with transparent success rates, experienced embryologists, and a support team that makes you feel heard – not just processed.

Ask about their lab standards, embryo freezing protocols, and what happens if a cycle is unsuccessful.

●      Maintaining healthy habits

It is significant to sustain healthy habits throughout this process to support your body’s ability to respond well to the treatment.

Make sure you prioritise a healthy diet, sleep and hydration, and bring movement and stress management practises to your lifestyle. Avoid strenuous exercises once stimulation begins, as it can affect the ovaries.

●      Building emotional resilience as a couple

Emotional resilience as a couple will help you get through the process, especially during those difficult days. Communicate with each other. Be transparent.

Make sure you celebrate small wins as each step is completed, as progress is made. Be patient and empathetic to each other and understand that each has a different way of coping. Get professional help if needed. Involve friends and families as well.

Conclusion

For many couples who struggle to conceive naturally, IVF comes as a hope for them. All you need is to understand the procedure, what to expect and what preparation you need to do before you even start.

Every fertility journey is unique, so you need professional guidance where qualified specialists can provide you with personalised care tailored to your specific medical needs. The process does demand patience and resilience, but it can give you the joy of parenthood.

Whether it is the journey of IVF or parenthood, safety is always parents’ first priority. Fortunately, R for Rabbit offers BICS-certified, specialised baby care products designed to make your life and your baby’s life comfortable.
