Beyond Willpower: Understanding Binge Eating Disorder and Healing the Emotional Relationship with Food

For millions of people, the daily experience of eating is accompanied by an exhausting internal monologue of rules, moral judgments, and post-meal remorse. While diet culture often dismisses struggles with food as mere discipline failures, the reality of clinical eating challenges is far more nuanced.

Among the most common yet frequently misunderstood conditions is Binge Eating Disorder (BED). To break the cycle of chronic dieting, secretive eating, and overwhelming guilt, we must look beneath the surface behaviors and understand what is actually driving our relationship with food.

1. The Myth of the “Willpower” Shortage

In a society saturated with restrictive eating trends and wellness perfectionism, individuals struggling with recurrent binge eating are often told that greater discipline is the solution. However, clinicians who specialize in eating disorder recovery recognize that willpower has very little to do with it.

“One of the biggest misconceptions is that binge eating disorder is just about a lack of willpower or self-control,” explains Deva Murphy, MSW, LCSW, a mental health therapist specializing in eating disorders at Shoreside Therapies. “It’s actually a serious eating disorder, and there’s usually a lot happening beneath the behavior—things like restriction, difficult emotions, shame, or using food as a way to cope.”

Binge eating is rarely a standalone act; it is almost always a physiological and psychological response to perceived or actual deprivation. When strict food rules label everyday items as “forbidden,” the brain enters a scarcity mindset. When consumption inevitably occurs, it is frequently accompanied by a feeling of having “blown it,” leading to an episode of loss-of-control eating followed immediately by intense shame.

2. Navigating the Post-Meal Shame Spiral

Food guilt is one of the primary engines that keeps disordered eating cycles spinning. After eating something outside of an arbitrary dietary rule, many people instinctively turn to compensatory behaviors: skipping the next meal, exercising to “burn it off,” or declaring that a new, stricter diet will start on Monday.

Unfortunately, this compensatory restriction guarantees physical hunger and psychological resentment, setting the stage directly for the next binge.

To interrupt this cycle, the recovery process focuses on shifting from self-punishment to non-judgmental awareness.

“Start by getting curious about the guilt instead of immediately trying to fix it or compensate for what you ate,” advises Murphy. “Ask yourself, ‘What rule do I think I broke?’ A lot of food guilt comes from rigid beliefs about certain foods being ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ rather than from actually doing something wrong.”

When individuals learn to deconstruct moralized food rules—recognizing that nourishment, pleasure, and emotional connection to food are normal human experiences—the emotional charge around eating begins to dissipate.

3. How Therapy Untangles the Emotional Function of Disordered Eating

While food is the medium through which distress is expressed, disordered eating behaviors usually function as a coping mechanism for underlying emotional turmoil. Binge eating can provide a temporary buffer against loneliness, a rapid distraction from overwhelming workplace stress, or a sense of tangible control in an environment that feels unpredictable.

Addressing BED effectively requires exploring what purpose the behavior is serving in a safe, compassionate therapeutic environment.

“Therapy helps us look at what the eating behavior might be doing for someone emotionally,” notes Murphy. “We can start identifying patterns—maybe food is being used to cope with stress, numb difficult feelings, create a sense of control, or manage anxiety—and then work on more productive ways to meet those same needs without relying so heavily on food or eating behaviors.”

Through evidence-based clinical modalities—such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT-E), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and somatic mindfulness techniques—individuals learn to:

  • Identify emotional and situational triggers before reaching a crisis point.
  • Develop diverse, practical toolkits for emotional regulation that do not center on restriction or bingeing.
  • Re-establish attunement with natural hunger and fullness cues.
  • Reclaim cognitive space and mental energy previously consumed by food preoccupation.

4. Finding Support and Long-Term Healing

Recovery from an eating disorder is rarely a straight line, but lasting peace with food and body image is entirely achievable with comprehensive, specialized care. Healing begins when individuals stop viewing their struggles as personal flaws and start treating them as understandable responses to distress that deserve compassionate clinical attention.

For individuals seeking specialized eating disorder treatment in Milwaukee, working alongside licensed clinicians provides the structured guidance, empathy, and evidence-based interventions necessary to build a sustainable, peaceful relationship with food.
